I was going through my files, emptying photos I no longer need when I came across a dvd cover I did in 2006. My sister in law Michelle, a talented videographer, had the idea of putting all of the super eight films our father in law gave to her, onto a dvd and giving them away as Christmas gifts to all members of the family. She was able to transfer and edit them onto disks herself. My husband and his brother chose the music and I designed the cover and image on the disk.
While Michelle had access to certain equipment I thought this would be a fun idea to pass along. There are places online and in your town that can transfer old films. It may seem expensive at first but if you're doing these as gifts, its actually a decent price. If you don't have any old films it might be a nice idea to record some scenes throughout the year and pass them along to friends or family. I don't have a video camera but I use my camera to record short clips. One thing I wish I had was a recording of my (video or audio) of when I was a child.
Anyhow it's just a suggestion that may inspire you to begin playing with the idea of making your own family film. What a wonderful thing to give to those who are far away or for younger generations who haven't seen the films before.
