One of the great things about where I live is that the town hosts a film festival every October. Tickets went on sale today for the Bend Film Fest and I'm hoping to catch at least a few films as next month will be very busy with a couple of family visits among other things. What I 'd like to check out is the Future Filmmakers part which will be kicking off the five day event. My talented sister in law, Michelle ( a filmmaker and former teacher), started the Future Filmmakers Festival/competition a few years ago after seeing the need for some amazingly talented students to have a place to show their work. Michelle has passed along the reins to the Bend Film Festival (so she can focus on her film business and family) and they will be hosting the student festival in conjunction with their own event from now on. Anyhow, we're proud of the work Michelle has done in getting this launched. Here a just a few of the students films from last year :)
You should also check out the short video a twelve year old made using Amy Earles paper dolls . She posted the clip on her site recently.
I hope to show a few finished items by next week. My studio days are Weds-Friday and so my worktable looks pretty much the same as I left it on Friday. I'm working on a doll for the Nie-Nie * Benefit sale on Etsy which needs to be sent off by this week and I'm helping out my aunt with some designs wedding invitations for my cousin. Plus I have a small show next month to plan for, family& house to attend to, another birthday party this weekend, etc ..busy, busy :)
Speaking of Nie Nie *, the Neilson's story was featured this week on the Today show.
What happened to last week and this weekend? It just blew by didn't it. I'd look at the clock and what I thought had been a half hour that just passed actually turned out to be two hours. I blinked and Thursday turned in Sunday.
Thank you to everyone who left wonderful comments here, contacted me through Etsy and posted my dolls on their websites this week. Thanks to many people for making my shop update such a success last week and all of this month!:)
I'm sending off the last of my packages Monday and have started to work on more dolls this weekend. All of the lady bird dolls sold out and I've had requests for more, so expect to see some at the next update (check back as I will be announcing the next update sometime this week). I've also had requests/suggestions for different ethnicities which I had been considering lately; they too will be included in my next batch of dolls :)
I've been thinking a lot about birds as of late. When I get some time, I'd like to pull out my Winged Migration movie from the top of my closet and watch it again. If you haven't seen Winged Migration may I suggest it the next time you're in the video store wondering what's worth renting. I saw the movie three or four times in the theater when it came out in 2003. I had seen the trailer for the movie and was quite impressed. To be honest ,had someone recommended I go see a two hour film about birds migrating all over the world, I probably would've passed on it. But it's a gorgeous film and afterwards you'll have a greater appreciation of the beauty of other creatures in this world and the challenges they face. It has a beautiful and rather moving soundtrack as well. Jacques Perrin directed the film~ he's the actor who played the adult Salvatore in Cinema Paradiso..another great film...but that'll have to wait for another post :)
Nick Cave's gorgeous song To be by your side is featured in the movie..here's another clip I can't help but include..
My favorite day of the week has usually been Thursday. It represents anticipation and an easy down hill ride towards the weekend. Today ,however, had me wondering if I should've bothered getting up..ever have days like that? You're sick, you didnt sleep and then you spill your $5 Starbucks drink (triple shot) right next to and under your laptop and it ruins the left speaker and because you yanked your computer away from the desk, the internet connection is no longer working. While on the phone with your DSL provider in India you go into a coughing fit so bad you start hyperventilating and have to hang up the phone on Mr. Qwest guy. And while your gagging and coughing you realize that the other phone upstairs by the modem is still on and he can probably hear you cursing in between gasps for air..Ever have a morning like that? That's been my day up till noon..so far! I shouldn't complain..some people actually have it bad out there so I'm fortunate actually..it's all a matter of perspective!
Well I have a new doll ready. I promise not to complain too much more but she was difficult to make. She turned out nothing like what I had in mind, in fact it was as if she had her own determined personality and refused to cooperate until I gave in to what she wanted to look like. I havent decided if she'll be named Isolde or Persephone..maybe Ramona? Whoever she is she's the largest doll I've ever made. She's 21.5" tall and is jointed at the elbows and knees. When I started making dolls three years ago they averaged about 5" tall. I thought I was going large with my new ones on Etsy last month that were about 10". Now I'm up to 22" inches almost and I love working with that size. Problem is the price will have to reflect that. I think I'll go back and forth on both sizes and maybe do some 5" dolls.
She'll be in the shop this afternoon~ Click here for more pics of her
Here is a photo showing the range of sizes of my dolls. The doll on Kiki's lap was the first one I ever made about three years ago. She's almost 5", Kiki is approx 18", the new Girl is 21.5" and Eva on her lap is almost 10 "
p.s...I was born on a Thursday..surprise surprise :)
I have been wanting to rent one of my fav. movies lately..I need to buy this one..I love it! Its Jean Cocteau's "Beauty and the Beast" from the 1940's..a must next time you hit your local indie rental place.(Cocteau is pictured down below ,in the Kiki entry, holding the frame) Any of his films are worth seeing..trippy and beautifully shot.
