Process: Marionettes with Geahk Burchill from Etsy on Vimeo.
"These puppets aren't for kids. Our puppets have dark pasts and haunted futures.."~Cast Iron Carousel
I have such an appreciation for those who work with puppets via stop motion animation or performance pieces. So when I come across a video like this one on Etsy , featuring the Cast Iron Carousel Marionette Troupe (based in Portland, Oregon), I get really excited as I love to discover what's new in the world of modern puppetry. You can click on the link by the video above to read the original interview on Etsy and visit CIC's website here to learn more about them and visit this link to see more detailed images of the marionettes.
The Third Annual Shrine for Hope (Auction to benefit the Oaxaca Street Children Grassroots organization) is coming up! Organizer and artist Rebecca Brooks has gathered several artists who have a passion for Mexico (and it's people and culture), to create artful cigar box shrines. Each shrine will auctioned off and all proceeds go to help Oaxaca Street Children Grassroots, a non profit organziation dedicated to helping children receive an education and assist with basic needs. This will be my third time participating in the event and the auction will take place in May and I will post more information as the time nears :)
* * A long overdue note about Frida Dolls * *
I will not be creating a shrine with a Frida doll as I have for the previous two auctions. I was contacted by the Frida Kahlo Corp. last summer and informed that her name and image are trademarked worldwide with regards to certain products including dolls. I contacted them minutes after receiving their email asking what was permissable since my dolls were one of a kind art pieces and never heard back from them. Many of you have been asking about Frida dolls and this is why I haven't created any more. I would love to hear back from F.K.C. as many of us artists, specifically doll makers, who want to honor the memory of Frida via our art, do not wish to violate copyright/trademark laws, but also would like to still create one of a kind pieces. In the meantime you can google the company and visit the official website where they have licensed Frida products including the official doll.
